Tasting Notes
Etienne Henri Bourgeois pioneered oak aging in Sancerre. Made only in exceptional years, this wine is aged in oak, giving it a smooth texture and an attractive touch of spice. It is just reaching maturity, with the white fruits and toast beautifully integrated.
Vinification
Thanks to his love for wood, our ancestor Etienne (known as Henri) was the first in Sancerre to make a wine in new oak barrels. Such a method of vinification requires top-quality grapes for a successful marriage of wood and wine.
Alcoholic fermentation is exclusively in oak barrels (new or one or 2 years old) followed by 12 months of maturation.
Viticulture
This cuvee comes from the older vines on flinty-clay slopes in Saint-Satur. This unique terroir gives a great strength and concentration to the wines.
Feature: low yields, organic fertilizer only, use of grass cover, everything is done to respect the terroir and to obtain the most beautiful grapes possible.
History
For ten generations now the Bourgeois family has devoted its passion and values to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, becoming Sancerre’s most well-known producer. The company is now led by the current generation of the family – Jean-Marie and Remi Bourgeois. The winery and family base is the village of Chavignol, and Domaine holdings can be found on a mosaic of plots throughout Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Each plot is isolated and worked in respect of its origin to reveal, in the most precise and true way, the expression of its terroir, whether we are talking Kimmeridgian marls, flint, or limestone clay soils. We see this expressed in a dizzying array of bottlings, many of which are amongst the most sought after of their kind in the Loire each year.
Food pairing
The power and complexity of this wine call for meals with strong personalities. Etienne Henri's light oak notes are a natural for grilled fish and white meats while the wine's roundness lends itself to dishes prepared with sauces or creams. Some good pairing could include: Red snapper coated with spiced oil and grilled; roasted chicken with truffle cream sauce.
