Cellars Unio
Founded in 1942 in Reus, Spain, Cellers Unió is a cornerstone of the Catalan wine industry. What began as the Unión de Cooperativas del Campo de la Província de Tarragona has evolved into a powerhouse marketing cooperative representing over 20,000 grower families.
For over eight decades, its history has mirrored the evolution of winemaking in southern Catalonia, bridging the gap between small-scale farming and the global market.
Cellers Unió has been a pivotal player in the formalization of Spanish wine regions’ history. It bottled its first DOQ Priorat wine shortly after the region’s legal creation in the 50’s. In the 1970’s it expanded into internation markets, launching its first DO Tarragona wines. In the early 2000’s it actively participated in the founding of the DO Montsant and in 2008 it introduced its first certified organic wines, signaling a shift towards sustainable viticulture.
Today, Cellers Unió serves as an umbrella for 186 smaller cooperatives, managing a vast 4,400 hectares of vineyards across Catalonia and Mallorca. Their reach spans one DOQ (Priorat) and five DOs (Montsant, Terra Alta, Tarragona, Catalunya, and Binissalem).
The cooperative’s mission extends beyond production; it is dedicated to "dignifying" agricultural work. By providing technical, logistical, and legal support to its thousands of members, Unió ensures that traditional Mediterranean farming remains viable and that the land is preserved through sustainable practices for future generations.
The cooperative’s dedicated facility in the DO Montsant is located in the village of Els Guiamets. Here, the focus is on crafting approachable, fruit-forward wines that serve as a genuine reflection of the terroir. A primary highlight of this region is the Perlat range, a pioneering brand that helped define the identity of the DO Montsant since its inception.
Through innovation and a commitment to quality, Cellers Unió now exports more than 25 different brands to over 30 countries, proving that high-volume cooperation and high-quality terroir can go hand in hand.
