Shibumi Knoll
Shibumi Knoll
Founded in 2003, Shibumi Knoll Vineyards produces some of the finest Chardonnay, Cabernet and Pinot from California. All the wines are made by Thomas Rivers Brown at the Tamber Bey Winery in Calistoga.
Located in the center of Napa Valley, a little off Highway 29 and a quarter mile from the Napa River, lies the knoll. The small knoll was included in the two-acre parcel along with a three-quarter acre Cabernet vineyard planted a few years before. It was a very modest vineyard cottage, a guest house and a winery, but after remodeling that knoll became their family home. The Shibumi Cabernet comes from the original small vineyard located on the property on the alluvial fan of Mill Creek composed of mostly rock. The vineyards position allows the wine to show the classic portfolio of a Napa Vineyard Cabernet yet has the structure seen in wines from stony hillside vineyards.
After establishing itself, the family discovered the Buena Tierra vineyard in the Russian River Valley introduced to them by vintner Eugena Keegan. She brought the chardonnay grapes from the Sonoma coast and the Shibumi family adored them, purchasing the grapes immediately at full price. It was a gamble considering the age of the vines and the low production that paid off in recognition from Wine Spectator, putting the vineyard on the map.
Following their acquisition of the Russian River Valley Chardonnay, Shibumi Knoll ventured into Pinot Noir. Their grapes hail from the Riddle Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast. The 2017 vintage was the first to use the grapes from Riddle Vineyard, which is one of Thomas’ vineyards. Prior to the 2017 vintage, the Pinot was produced from wines from the Buena Tierra Vineyard. The Burgundian style Pinot Noir is a favorite among their varietals.
