The winery & vineyard’s history goes back to the late 1800s when 180 acres were purchased by Robert Keenan on Spring Mountain in the Mayacamas Mountain Range. The first grapes planted there were Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, and the first harvest took place in 1977.
A few years later, in 1998, Michael Keenan took over day-to-day operations and wine making. He then made the bold decision to replace the vineyards and “Go Green” adding the winery’s solar system that fully powers the estate. This environmentally proactive energy source, combined with the sustainable farming practices of their estate vineyards led to recognition by the Napa Valley Vintners Association of the Keenan estate as a ‘green’ winery, and a leading producer in Spring Mountain vineyard wine.
Keenan Wines are a true archetype of the distinctive terroir of the region and reflect the adherence to vineyard and winemaking practices designed to showcase the uniqueness of this mountainside environment. The environment of the Keenan Winery Estate on Spring Mountain is the foundation for the superb quality of the grapes. Wines produced by the estate show great concentration, structure, and true grape typicity. They use a true collaborative approach to winemaking, with President Michael Keenan working in harmony with General Manager Matt Gardner, Cellar Master Aristeo Garcia Martinez and Cellar hand David Cruz. Matt has been with the estate since 1995. Together, they along with son Reilly Keenan, establish winemaking protocols, aging, and the finished style of Keenan wines. The combination of their long-term and first-hand knowledge of the winery and vineyards is the key to producing exceptional wines that reflect a minimal, more natural and balanced style. To the surprise of none, Keenan Wines have been recognized as one of the top 100 in the world for their superb vintages and dedication to the land.
