Tasting notes
Pale straw in color. Pure focused fruitaromas of ripe citrus, white peach, a pleasant fragrance of white blossom. An underlying yeast influence is attained from a naturally occurring fermentation in old oak barrels for a period of 18 months. A complex full bodied style of Sauvignon Blanc with a
chalky minerality and fresh herbal influence, complimented by a slightly funky reductive edge.
Estate
Almost since its inception, Dog Point's Sauvignon Blanc has been named by major critics as New Zealand’s top Sauvignon. Dog Point is the result of a collaboration between two Cloudy Bay alumni, enologist James Healy and founding viticulturalist Ivan Sutherland. Both left Cloudy Bay at the end
of 2003, although they have produced their own wines from the 2002 vintage forward.
Vineyard
The vineyards for Dog Point's white wines are mostly planted on free draining silty clay loams in the Wairau Valley, soils that predominantly express citrus and grapefruit flavors.
Vinification
Section 94 is fermented in barrel with wild yeasts and receives 18 months of aging in used French oak barrels, with regular lees stirring and minimal racking. The result is a wine with great presence, with the classic Marlborough qualities of citrus and gooseberries back by a rich spiciness from
the lees contact and subtle hint of smoke.
Wine
Section 94 is widely regarded as the best Sauvignon Blanc being made in New Zealand today. James Healy and Ivan Sutherland were among the first to begin
fermenting their Sauvignon in barrel with wild yeasts, a technique that leads to richer wines with greater cellar potential.
