Wine
Guigal produces from their Saint-Joseph Lieu Dit vineyard both a red and a white, each of which shows the complexity and depth that Saint Joseph can achieve. Guigal believes, as do a number of top producers working in the area, that Saint-Joseph will do one of the great stories in the next few decades, reaching the renown it enjoyed several hundred years ago.
Estate
The firm of E. Guigal, located in Ampuis, was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal. Since 1961 his son Marcel has led the estate, and his unparalleled work ethic and dedication to quality have brought attention to Cote-Rotie and other appellations throughout the Rhone that were in danger of being lost, and lifted the Guigal wines to the pinnacle of the wine world. Today, Marcel’s son Philippe serves as Director and Oenologist, continuing the tradition of leadership in the Rhone Valley and uncompromising excellence.
Vineyard
Guigal's Saint-Joseph Lieu Dit comes from the vineyard that gives the appellation its name, and is one of the finest sites in the Northern Rhone Valley. Guigal owns the majority of this parcel, with 14 acres in total, 60% of which is planted to red grapes and 40% to white grapes. The vines are from 20 to 75 years of age, planted on steep slopes of gneiss with streaks of granite, and produce yields of only around 1.9 tons per acre. The special, full-bodied dry white wine that results is deep and rich, and gains in complexity with Guigal's aging approach.
Vinification
Alcoholic fermentation is carried out at controlled temperatures of 64 degrees Fahrenheit. The wine was aged in 50% new oak barrels and 50% in second year barrels for 1 months.
