Poggio Antico

Poggio Antico is one of Montalcino's most elevated estates, with vineyards averaging 1476 feet above sea level, southwest of the famed medieval citadel. Both the unique location and altitude privilege the wines of Poggio Antico, which benefit from the perfect exposure and enjoy favorable overnight drops in temperature, ideal conditions that increase finesse and intense bouquet.

Poggio Antico is located on the highest ridge south of Montalcino. The estate covers about 494 acres, with 91 planted to vineyards between 1640 and 2034 feet above sea level. Elevation, constant ventilation, and strong diurnal shifts naturally shape the character of the wines. The soils are predominantly calcareous – galestro, alberese, sands, and marine-origin silts – poor and well-draining, capable of producing grapes with freshness and fine tannins.

Viticulture is managed with precision: the vineyards have been mapped into 15 soil units, each cultivated, harvested, and vinified separately. Aging also follows this principle, with every parcel maturing on its own, mainly in large casks, to preserve its identity. Agronomic choices – pruning, canopy management, crop load – are adjusted each year according to the conditions of each plot.

The estate follows regenerative and organic practices such as green manure and permanent cover crops to protect soil fertility, structure, and biodiversity. In the cellar, the focus is on gentle extractions and tailored aging times that respect the individuality of each parcel. The wines are unfiltered: the goal is not to impose a style, but to faithfully reflect altitude, soils, and exposures. Elegance, freshness, and authenticity of terroir are the guiding principles of Poggio Antico.
