Familia Fernández Rivera

The history of Familia Fernández Rivera began over 50 years ago, driven by Esperanza Rivera and her husband, whose entrepreneurial spirit laid the foundation for the family legacy. Today, the company encompasses four wineries, a hotel, and a team of over 120 employees. Guided by a deep love for winemaking and a passion for sharing it with the world, Familia Fernández Rivera has expanded its reach, bringing its products to more than 70 countries.

Their story began in 1972 when the couple used the proceeds from selling a patent to purchase a small, 16th-century stone winery. Using grapes from their family vineyards, they began crafting wines that captured the distinct essence of their land. Three years later, they released their first vintage under the name "Tinto Pesquera," a tribute to their hometown of Pesquera del Duero. The wine quickly became the flagship label of the brand and it’s rapid success drew international attention to the region's potential, ultimately helping drive the official establishment of the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin in 1982.

Coinciding with the creation of the Designation of Origin, the family introduced Janus, a wine produced only in exceptional harvest years using select grapes from the finest Tinto Pesquera vineyards. Named after the Roman god of passages and transformations, Janus represents the ultimate expression of their terroir and the Tempranillo grape, resulting in an elegant, intense, and age-worthy wine.

In 1993, Condado de Haza joined the Familia Fernández Rivera portfolio. Recognized multiple times by Wine Spectator on its prestigious "Top 100 Wines in the World" list, further solidifying the family’s reputation for excellence. Next came Dehesa de la Granja, a historic estate with over three centuries of heritage, chosen by the family to bridge winemaking with traditional agriculture and livestock farming, seamlessly uniting gastronomy and oenology.

Just before the turn of the millennium, El Vínculo was established in Campo de Criptana to produce exceptional wines in La Mancha. Alongside Tempranillo, the winery revitalized Airén vines, including historic pre-phylloxera plots (viñas del país), which yield Alejairén, one of the most celebrated white wines in the region.

Expanding beyond winemaking, Familia Fernández Rivera opened Hotel AF Pesquera in Peñafiel, located along the famous "Golden Mile" of Ribera del Duero, to deliver an immersive wine tourism experience. Now led by its third generation, the founder’s granddaughters carry forward the group, honoring the core values and legacy that have defined the brand from the start.
