Ornellaia - Le Volte 2015
Vintage
After an unusual year in 2014, 2015 proved to be a very normal wine-making year, almost textbook. After a normal winter, wet and mild but with some days below 0degrees, germination arrived on time during the first few days of April. Spring was characterized, by dry and sunny weather, ideal conditions for normal vegetative growth that led to quick and full flowering at the end of May From June water stress steadily arrived. July will be remembered as particularly scorching hot and dry, with temperature highs consistently above 30degreesC on every single day of the month. Fortunately the rain arrived around 10th August with heavy rainfall that unblocked the ripening process, bringing with it some much fresher weather during the final phase of ripening. This cooler but sunny weather lasted for the entire harvesting period, allowing the winery to harvest very slowly, waiting to make sure that every vineyard had arrived at the perfect point in the maturing phase, uniting a fresh and lively aromatic quality with a perfect phenolic maturity with plenty of tannins, yet still silky and soft.
Estate
Ornellaia is a legendary estate hidden in the foothills of Bolgheri, facing the Mediterranean coast. The winery was founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, and its first vineyards planted the following year. Today the estate is owned by Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi, one of Italy’s
most revered wine families. Ornellaia produces world class wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc, and prides itself on its obsession with excellence – at all levels. No shortcuts in the production process are allowed or tolerated, each grape is subject to a double selection process, and each vineyard is vinified separately in individual tanks, allowing each individual base wine to contribute its own
character to the final blend.
Vinification
The different varietals were fermented separately in small steel tanks to maintain their varietal characteristics intact. The alcoholic fermentation was followed by malolactic fermentation, again in steel tanks. The wine was then aged for 10 months, partly in barrique used for Ornellaia and partly in cement tanks, to obtain the perfect balance between tannic structure and an expression of fresh fruit.
Wine
Le Volte dell'Ornellaia combines Mediterranean expression of opulence and generosity with structure and complexity. The approachable style of Le Volte dell'Ornellaia, a blend of Merlot (67%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and Sangiovese (13%), reflects the philosophy and savoirfaire of Ornellaia.
