Product Ratings
James Suckling 96pt

A restrained and elegant wine with licorice, strawberries, bergamot and smoke on the nose. Smooth on the palate, with a lush full body, velvety tannins and freshness. Very approachable despite the structure. Lifted finish.

Vinous Media 95pt

The 2021 Barolo Prapo is a dark, brooding wine, but then again, we are in Serralunga. Dried herbs, coffee, menthol, cloves, leather and iron convey somber intensity. The tannins are quite imposing, but that is to be expected here.

Wine Advocate 97pt

Showing firm structure and a bold fruit profile, the Ceretto 2021 Barolo Prapo reveals a dark core with crushed stone, iron oxide and candied cherry. Prapo never holds back in terms of intensity. This site has a unique ripening cycle that means harvest comes 10 days later, giving the fruit more time to develop complexity. This wine is just terrific.

Wine Spectator 95pt

Lithe and linear, this red boasts cherry, strawberry, hibiscus, leather, iron and eucalyptus flavors. Tightly wound, with the dense matrix of tannins lending lift and aging potential. Shows fine length but needs time.

Estate

Ceretto is a family estate based in Alba, in the heart of the Langhe, founded in the 1930s by Riccardo Ceretto. In the 1960s and 1970s his sons Bruno and Marcello acquired some of the finest crus of the area, including Bricco Rocche, Brunate and Prapo in Barolo and Asili and Bernadot in Barbaresco. Now led by the third generation of the family, Ceretto farms its vineyards organically and crafts wines that express the character of each site.

Description

Prapo, in Serralunga d'Alba, wraps around the hill of the same name and looks out on one side toward the highest hills of the Langhe. Ceretto has worked this land since the 1960s: the soil is rich but the exposure is cool and the grapes ripen slowly, an advantage in rainy years and an extra opportunity in hot ones. It is a Serralunga Barolo for Nebbiolo purists, a pleasure young with the right food or after years in the cellar, when its full complexity unfolds.

Winemaker

Winemaker: Alessandro Ceretto
Alessandro Ceretto, of the family's third generation, oversees the estate's vineyards and winemaking.

Terroir

Silt (39.5%), clay (31.5%) and sand (29%)

Harvest

Hand-picked

Vinification

Barrels: 300-liter barrels, then large 50 hl botti (approx. 10% new oak)

Ageing

Around 30 months in wood (300-liter barrels, then large 50 hl botti), followed by a year in bottle

Technical Data

Average vine age: 30 to 50 years
Village: Serralunga d'Alba
Vineyard area: 2.30 ha

Tasting Notes

Darker and fleshier on the nose than Barolos from the western side of the appellation, with distinct balsamic notes. The tannins fill the palate and give it strength without drying the finish.

Food Pairing

Food pairing: Braised beef - game - mushroom risotto - aged cheeses
Serving temperature: 61-64°F
