Reviews

Wine Enthusiast 90

`This wood-aged wine is still finding its way. But its potential richness and dense texture are already there. As it matures, this wine will lose its spiciness and show good balance and great concentration.

Technical Details

Description

Marquis de Mons is the second wine of the Château La Tour de Mons. It comes from the same terroir and is vinified with as much care as the Grand Vin, and the blend is similar. It uses the younger vines of the estate. Marquis de Mons' wine style tends towards the research of balance, with supple tannins and good aromatic expression. It is a wine to enjoy whilst young (3 to 5 years).

Chateau La Tour de Mons is one of the oldest estates in the Medoc, with a history that dates back almost a thousand years to the 13th century. It takes its name from Pierre de Mons, who renamed the property after purchasing it in 1623. Chateau La Tour de Mons remained in the same family hands until 1995, when it was sold to CA Grands Crus, the wine estate division of the massive French bank Credit Agricole. In 2019 the estate changed hands again, being acquired by the Perrado family, owners of Chateau Labegorce and Chateau Marquis d’Alesme. Marquis de Mons is the chateau’s second label, made from the estate’s younger vines. The sizable 145-acre vineyard is planted to a 56/38/6 mix of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot planted in one large single block of vines.

Tasting notes

Marquis de Mons shows a ruby red color and presents a fresh nose with floral notes and small red berries. Soft in the mouth, the attack is round and greedy with nice acidity. The midpalate is well-balanced and harmonious. The finish offers sweet fruity aromas with toasted notes. Enjoyable young but also within 5-7 years.

Vinification

Produced from vines averaging 31 years of age and grown on garonne gravel and clay-limestone soils. This single block vineyard is located in the northern part of the Margaux appellation, on the banks of the Garonne, as the best Médoc Crus. Certified sustainable farming

The grapes are carefully sorted at the winery. Fermentation is carried out in temperature controlled stainless-steel tanks allowing slow fermentation at low temperature. The wine ages up to 12 months in French oak barrels.
