Vintage
The 2015 vintage in McLaren Vale will be remembered as one of the earliest and most condensed in history thanks largely to a dry and warm growing season. Ideal conditions in 2015 produced an exceptional Shiraz that speaks of its origin.
Estate
In a short period of time Mitolo has become recognized as one of the finest producers in McLaren Vale. Mitolo is a family owned business, started by and led by the founder and owner Frank Mitolo’s vision to create a range of wines of individuality, integrity and utmost quality. Whether it is in the vineyard, or in the winery, or the work of the different coopers who source and shape the diverse barrels which are used at Mitolo, each wine is nurtured and developed with a zealous passion that spares no effort to ensure that the best of everything is brought together to make wines of purity, elegance and power.
Tasting notes
Brooding and alluring nose of raspberry, plum and cocoa, with a slight herbal lift. Full flavored and mouth filling, deep, dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum and blackcurrant prevail. Well structured with a touch of spice and fine grained tannins that lead to along and savoury finish.
Vineyard
Being so close to the coast, the vines experience warm summer days that contribute to fruit intensity and excellent tannin ripeness, and cooling afternoon sea breezes and nights maintain good acid levels in the grapes, allowing extended maturation on the vine and resulting in complexity of
the flavor profile. The soils are heavy gray loam over sandstone, intermixed with black Biscay clay. The excellent water holding capacity of these soils mean minimal irrigation is required. The vines are an average age of 25 years old.
Vinification
Jester Shiraz fruit is crushed immediately after being delivered to us at the winery. We allow the skin and juice mix to warm naturally over a period of several days, after which it begins fermentation. Fermentation is held cool temperatures to retain the bright primary fruit characters which appear in the resulting wine. Following fermentation, the wine is carefully pressed to separate it from the skins. The wine is then transferred into oak barrels (10% new for this vintage) where it stays for 18 months before bottling
Wine
The Jester wines share the pedigree of the top Mitolo wines, but are more accessible and fruit-forward. Jester Shiraz is a blend of several blocks within the Lopresti vineyard in the Willunga district, all the way at the southern tip of McLaren Vale overlooking the coast.
