Bodegas Santiago Ruiz
Known as the “Father of Albariño,” Santiago Ruiz dedicated his life to championing the native varieties of O Rosal. The family’s winemaking roots date back to 1860, a legacy passed from Santiago’s grandfather, Ángel, down to Santiago himself, and now to his daughter, Rosa.
In 1984, after a career elsewhere, Santiago returned to his ancestors' traditions to open his eponymous winery. Today, Rosa Ruiz maintains the brand's character by balancing generational wisdom with modern techniques.
Before the Rías Baixas Designation of Origin even existed, Santiago was already refining the essence of Galician varietals. A tireless advocate for his homeland, he famously traveled across Spain with bottles tucked under his arm, sharing his passion one sample at a time. His dedication helped put the region on the global map, earning him the title of the first true ambassador for Rías Baixas. In honor of his role as a pioneer of Galician viticulture, his name now graces a local street and the winery he founded. To this day, the wine’s label features the iconic hand-drawn map originally created to guide guests to the estate, serving as a permanent nod to the brand’s hospitable, family roots.
Continuing this storied legacy, Rosa Ruiz has launched a signature wine in her name. Crafted from 100% Albariño old vines, it serves as a tribute to the summer afternoons of her childhood spent learning the craft at her father’s side.
