Reviews

Wine Enthusiast 92

Aged in American oak casks, then finished in "white-wine seasoned French oak barrels," this honey-hued whiskey has rich, powerful aromas of apricots and butterscotch. On the palate, surprising floral accents transition into honey and rounded stone-fruit notes, with a bit of a tannic pucker on the finish.

Technical Details

Description

The Bourbon is a blend of older and younger barrels 4-6 year being typical. Once they batch, they then “Dual Cask” age for 60-90 days in a combination of red and white-wine seasoned wine barrels prior to bottling to add aromatic complexity and a soft, supple finish.

Filibuster Dual Cask Bourbon is aged in charred new American oak casks for up to six years, and finishes maturing in toasted French oak barrels (emptied of any one of several fermented grape varietals) for 45-90 days. The mash bill is a “high rye” blend of 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley. Bottled at 90 proof

History

Filibuster Distillery is a woman and minority owned business with the soul of a small family enterprise. Born in D.C. and now located in Virginia, a true American pioneer. The business began on the corner of 9th, not far from the Capitol, so Filibuster was a natural name choice. They wanted to lampoon the intensity of the political culture in D.C. Maybe if everyone just talked it out over a few drinks, things would go more smoothly?

Tasting notes

After being aged in new charred oak casks, Filibuster adds their signature "Dual Cask" twist with a secondary aging in California wine barrels. This process bestows the 4- to 6-year-old blended bourbon with additional fruity nuances, such as cherries and apricots, which are joined by floral, honey, vanilla, and caramel accents on the palate. The slightly warming finish brings with it more caramel, spice, and tannins.
