Reviews

Decanter 93

Lean and angular with great mineral salinity and smoky grilled citrus aromas, this Chardonnay is from the Purple Hands organic estate site, planted in 1998—aromatics of grilled lemon peel, lemon grass and crushed slate alongside saline notes of sea breeze. The palate is bright and flashy, with piquant lemon verbena flavours, lemon drop candies, and cardamom spice, which finish the wine with bright, mouthwatering acidity.

James Suckling 92

This is spicy and cedary with ripe stone fruit, walnuts and pie crust. Polished and textured with a medium to full body and mineral undertones. Layered and structured with a lingering, even finish. Drink or hold.

Wine Advocate 93

The 2022 Chardonnay Haakon Lenai Vineyard, matured in 30% new oak, is pure and expressive. It has ringing aromas of peach and guava, plus accents of roasted hazelnuts, hay and honey. The medium-bodied palate offers surprisingly concentrated, detailed fruit. It balances bright acidity with a touch of textural grip, and it has a long, expansive finish.

Wine Enthusiast 93

This lemon-scented and mineral-driven Chardonnay has an additional aroma that I can't resist—lavender butter. The flavors are downright tropical, with macadamia nuts, lemon cookies and a dusting of coconut. The wine's texture is smooth and easy, with restrained acidity and a lengthy finish.

Technical Details

Estate

Purple Hands Vineyards celebrates site-specific pinot noir and chardonnay that unearth the Willamette Valley’s long evolutionary history. Using traditional winemaking techniques, they strive to produce wines that convey an honest expression of each of their vineyards—its grapevines and cultivation, soil and stone, sunshine and rain. All of their wines undergo native fermentation and remain unfined and unfiltered at bottling to preserve their natural, wild character. Achieving elegance in this pursuit is the passion and art of their craft. Over the past 40 years, Cody’s family has created a legacy of quality in the Oregon wine industry. Their winemaking styles and techniques helped Oregon’s Willamette Valley become the premium Pinot noir producing region in the world. At Purple Hands, Cody continues to build on the standard of excellence initiated by the previous generation.

Vineyard

Haakon Lenai Vineyard is a 35 acre property located in the Dundee Hills. It’s southeast facing and 100% Jory soil (Volcanic). It ranges in elevation from 400ft to 700ft. This Vineyard was originally planted by Jon Jennison and was previously called Thistle Vineyard. Cody and Marque acquired the vineyard in 2019 and have since renamed the site after their children’s middle names; Haakon/Lenai.
