Mint-chocolate edge to the blackberries, red capsicum and cedar wood on the nose. Very full-bodied palate, wrapped by tight, nicely chewy tannins. Flavorful and dense.

Comprising two barrels selected from two acres, held back for extra bottle age prior to release, the 2018 Ultimatum Cabernet Sauvignon Double Rock is owner-winemaker Nick Goldschmidt's attempt to play in the big leagues. Pencil shavings accent black cherries and raspberries on the nose, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is still tight and somewhat reticent even almost seven years after the vintage, framed by plenty of silky tannins. Long and dusty on the finish, with mouthwatering acidity, it has the potential for another 20 years of further aging.

The Goldschmidt Vineyard label is a program designed to showcase single vineyard source wines from both the Alexander Valley and Napa Valley Oakville appellations. The goal is to create wines that highlight the distinct characters, benefits and attributes derived from these site-specific harvests. Goldschmidt Vineyards Cabernets are crafted with the best possible resources to achieve exceptional richness, quality and balance – the hallmarks of world-class wines. Husband and wine team Yolyn and Nick Goldschmidt are owner/vintners, and Nick is the winemaker. The winery offices are located in Healdsburg. Both originally from New Zealand, Yolyn and Nick have spent time living and working in the wine areas of New Zealand, Australia and South America. Goldschmidt Vineyards is a vehicle by which Nick and Yolyn present their innovative way of wine making and wine presentation.

Vineyard

The name Double Rock comes from the way we collect the stones and place them under the vines to make it easier to walk the rows during the season. Located midway between Highway 29 and the famed Silverado Trail, our vineyard lies in the heart of Napa Valley with prestigious neighbors on all sides. This 2-acre block planted in 1988 steep above Game Ranch is a singular knoll within the valley that faces north by northwest. It is Farmed by hand organically with 30-year-old vines that have loose clusters, tiny berries and high skin-to-pulp ratio.
