Technical Details

Estate

Hourglass Wine produced their first vintage in 1997 and for many years their entire production was from the single 4 acre Hourglass Vineyard just north of St. Helena. Today they own two vineyards – the original estate Hourglass Vineyard (purchased in 1975) and the Blueline Vineyard in the Calistoga sub appellation (purchased in 2006). Pairing the wisdom, skill and artistry of the winemaking team and the soul of the dramatic vineyards, Hourglass wines are modern and simply elegant. Their goal is to capture the essence of two of Napa Valley’s most expressive vineyard sites in bottled form.

Tasting notes

Layered dimensions define the Blueline Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromatically, a complex weave of heady floral bands descend into blackberry bramble and cassis, with its tell-tale stripe of crushed stone and graphite providing precision and lift. Richly textured dark red and black fruits envelop the palate, with silky, sleek tannins carrying forward through the long, refined finish. Crackling minerality driven by Blueline’s rocky soils provides a taut counterpoint to the wine’s rich texture. Aged 20 months, 80% new French oak, 20% used oak.

Vineyard

The Blueline Estate was acquired in 2006 with the goal of finding the qualitative equal to Hourglass Estate. Two Blueline streams form the boundaries of the property, with the vineyard’s soils composed of the gravelly remnants of these ancient, upturned riverbeds. Mineral-rich and with incredible drainage, these soils drive the wine’s intense aromatics, deep fruit concentration and refined structure, yet are also the source of the vibrant energy in the wine.
