Appellation

Priorat is one of the world’s most prestigious wine-producing regions. It is 1 of 2 Top-Tier, DOQ classifications in Spain (the other being Rioja). This is a small, dynamic wine region in Catalonia, North-Eastern Spain. It is a relatively unpopulated and inhospitable area. The small town where Laurentia is produced only has around 350 inhabitants. This region has risen from almost unheard-of to one of the world's most expensive & collectable wines in a just few decades!

Description

The grapes are farmed and produced Sustainably. Laurentia is produced by a cooperative of local, small family farmers. This wine is approachable now but also good for decanting. It has an aging potential: 7+ years.

Terroir

Vines here grow in poor, rocky “slate” soils. They are planted on mountain slopes (1200 feet asl). It has poor nutrient soils that add to the concentration of the final wine. Some areas are so steep they need to use terraces, otherwise the vines would be blown away or washed away by erosion. It has low-yields and is very hot & dry (even by Spanish standards). Grapes from 60-70+ year old vines = Concentration.

Lower Yield = Better Quality (generally). The average production per vine here is often less than 3 pounds! (An average vine produces 15-20 lbs.) Often you only produce 1 bottle per vine (crazy ---but also expensive).
