Reviews

Vinous Media 91

The 2023 Cuvee Protos was aged five months on lees in concrete and foudres. Greenish yellow in color, it opens with apple compote, pastry cream, soft oak, nutmeg and light fennel. The palate is medium-bodied and sapid, with a smooth leesy feel. This vintage lends a slightly muted character.

Technical Details

Estate

Originally known as the Cooperatia de Pañafiel in the year 1927, the Bodegas Protos winery was the first winery of the Ribera del Duero. This project started with the union of some of the best Spanish winemakers at the time and through their grand efforts and perseverance for each wine vintage, they became one of the best wineries of Spain. The name “Protos” comes from Greek to mean “first.” This name brings back the fact that they were the first winery of Peñafiel, Spain, founding the winemaking of the Ribera.

Tasting notes

Bright yellow straw color, with green hints that reflect its youth. The nose has a nice aromatic intensity, a bit fresher but slightly less complex than traditional Verdejo. Citrus notes, along with green apple and herbs appear. Dry with good acidity, but with good roundness and structure brought by the 2 months fine lees aging. Long finish with a slightly bitter palate, where the apple and herbal notes appear. A great pairing with Sushi, seafood, roasted vegetables, ceviche.

Vinification

Young vineyards cultivated through organic agriculture, duly accredited. Mechanical night harvest. Skin contact maceration of 4 hours at 10ºC. Static racking at 10ºC. Controlled fermentation at 13.5ºC, with indigenous yeasts. Aging on fine lees for approximately 2 months. All products used during elaboration are in line with organic winemaking.
