Reviews
James Suckling 92
Aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, dried herbs and spice box. It’s medium-to full-bodied with fine, supple tannins and tangy acidity. Juicy and nicely spiced.

Wine Enthusiast 93
In this wine, aromas of Mission fig, purple plum, milk chocolate and violet set the scene for blackberry preserve, cherry, caramel, cocoa powder and clove flavors. Sturdy tannins and notes of chocolate linger on the palate.

Vinous Media 91
The label for the 2020 Protos 27 is a replica of the one that adorned the company's first vintage. Made entirely from Tempranillo grapes sourced from Anguix, Roa, Quintamanvirgo and La Horra, it was aged 16 months in French oak barrels. Garnet-red in color. The balsamic nose includes notes of plum, herbs, graphite and pencil box aromas. Dry and broad on the palate with fine, polished tannins and well-balanced acidity, it ends with a flavorful, long-lasting finish. This is a well-crafted, cosmopolitan Ribera red.

Technical Details
Description
Protos ’27 was produced in a homage to the 11 visionaries that founded Protos in 1927. It is a wine where the years of better vineyard techniques and winery research blend together to form a beautiful orchestra of wood and fruit that embodies not only our history but our wishful look towards the future.
Estate
Originally known as the Cooperatia de Pañafiel in the year 1927, the Bodegas Protos winery was the first winery of the Ribera del Duero. This project started with the union of some of the best Spanish winemakers at the time and through their grand efforts and perseverance for each wine vintage, they became one of the best wineries of Spain. The name “Protos” comes from Greek to mean “first.” This name brings back the fact that they were the first winery of Peñafiel, Spain, founding the winemaking of the Ribera
Tasting notes
Intense cherry red color, with violet hues resulting in a very vivid and bright wine. Elegant, with fresh and original aromas of ripe black fruits, sweet spices and fine toasted notes. Very balanced and easy to drink wine, with round tannins and a long and very pleasant finish. Pair with BBQ, lamb, stews and even seafood with rich sauces.
Vinification
Harvested from old vineyards from Burgos Province. Planted over 50 years ago. Manual harvest. Pre-fermentative cold maceration. Alcoholic fermentation with selected indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats. Maceration for 20 days with several daily battonage. Aged 16 months in new French barrels where fermentation took place. Futher aged 12 months in bottle prior to release.
