Tasting notes
Straw colored. Fermented using natural yeasts this wine shows aromas of flint, lemon peel and ripe citrus fruits framed by toasty mineral nuances. Seamlessly integrated oak leads into a wonderfully balanced Chardonnay with focused texture, vibrant acidity and a lively finish.
Estate
Almost since its inception, Dog Point's Sauvignon Blanc has been named by major critics as New Zealand’s top Sauvignon. Dog Point is the result of a collaboration between two Cloudy Bay alumni, enologist James Healy and founding viticulturalist Ivan Sutherland. Both left Cloudy Bay at the end
of 2003, although they have produced their own wines from the 2002 vintage forward.
Vineyard
Dog Point's white wines are mostly planted on free draining silty clay loams on the flats in the Wairau Valley, soils that predominantly express citrus and grapefruit flavors. Fruit from the hillside blocks add to the interest of the Chardonnay blend.
Vinification
Dog Point's Chardonnay is hand-harvested and whole-cluster pressed, then barrel fermented with native yeasts. The wine received 18 months aging on lees in French oak barrels, 20% new, with regular lees stirring and minimal racking. The winemaking is non-interventionist, and all the wines are given extended barrel aging with minimal handling, and all bottling is done without fining and with minimal filtration.
Wine
Dog Point Vineyard wines are hand-crafted from estate fruit grown on some of the oldest vines and best sites in Marlborough, some plantings dating back to the 1970s. Abundant sunshine, low rainfall and cool autumn nights characterize the long growing season, enabling the slow evolution of a rich
array of vibrant fruit flavors.
