Reviews

James Suckling 91

A restrained wine with black pepper, spice, red cherry and herb aromas. Light- to medium-bodied, it shows a leafy touch to the flavors, with firm, chalky tannins and a juicy aftertaste.

by JS, James Suckling , 2025

Vinous Media 91

The 2021 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Rafael is wonderfully fresh, with a perfumed blend of dried roses, violets and chalk dust giving way to wild blueberries. This sweeps across the palate, lifted and refined, with silky textures and juicy red berry fruits that swirl throughout. It tapers off classically dry, with a gentle staining of tannins and a bump of acidity that keeps the taster looking back to the glass for more.

Technical Details

Estate

Tommasi is historically and today a standard bearer of the Amarone appellation, and one of the most important quality producers in the Veneto. The family-run estate was founded in 1902 by Giacomo Tommasi in the village of Pedemonte, which lies in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico region. The family owns 234 acres in Valpolicella Classico, making them the single largest land owners in the area. Over the years they have expanded their holdings in other areas of the Veneto, and now own 370 acres. As has been the case since the winery’s establishment, the family works only with grapes they grow, an important quality decision and reflection of their deep connection to the Valpolicella soil.

Tasting notes

A blend of 60% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella and 15% Molinara. The aromas recall dried spices, leather and cherry and the flavors are intense, with spicy, sweet cherry flavors. Beautifully balanced and very expressive, Rafael pairs wonderfully with a platter of cured meats and cheeses.

Vineyard

This Valpolicella comes from the historical Tommasi family vineyard, Rafaèl. Perfectly situated on one of the region's most famous hills, Monte Masua, it produces what may be the best grapes for the production of Valpolicella Classico Superiore.

Vinification

Careful cultivation of the vineyard, a rigorous selection of grapes and meticulous vinification all contribute to the productio of this fresh, elegant Valpolicella. It sees 12 months of aging in large Slavonian oak casks of 65 hl.
