Reviews

Decanter 94

Effe 55 comes from a two-hectare northeast-facing plot at 550 metres above sea level and includes the estate's oldest vines, which were planted in 1970 to Sangiovese clones from Montalcino. A mellow yet promising nose exhibits red currants laced with stony mineral and seductive truffles. Attractively textured with wood that frames rather than imposes, the tannins are firm and the acidity crisp. Blood orange lingers on the finish. Elegant and understated, this promises to express more with time.

James Suckling 93

Walnuts, cherries, blueberries, chocolate, oregano and mint leaves on the nose. Salted olives, too. Flavorful, broad and inviting, with a medium to full body and firm, fine tannins. I like the salty undertones. Long. 100% sangiovese. Drink or hold.

Vinous Media 94

The 2019 Chianti Classico Effe 55, the estate's Gran Selezione, is plush, silky and super appealing. Sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, dried leaves and exotic spice overtones meld into a core of sweet macerated cherry. Long and persistent, the 2019 is impeccably balanced. Silky tannins round things out in style.

Wine Spectator 93

A succulent red marked by a mix of lively cherry, pomegranate, earth and leafy underbrush flavors backed by a sinewy structure, leaving dusty tannins and a pleasant astringency on the finish. Aeration and food will mitigate this wine's tannins.

Technical Details

Estate

The hill called Setriolo has always been considered as one of the best areas for grape production inside of the estate Capraia. The special soil in this vineyard, with a high content of sand and chalk, adds depth, intensity and elegance to the wine. The vineyard is registered in page ("foglio") 55, which gives its name to the wine.

Food pairing

Stewed meat, game, aged cheese.

Tasting Notes

This wine displays an intense aroma of red berries, even cherries under spirit, over notes of cocoa beans and well-integrated hints of oak. On the palace it is warm and powerful, and the cannic structure adds drinkability and elegance to the wine. At the same time, itsacidity and minerality grant for a long and refreshing finish. In order to preserve the natural features of this wine, only natural methods have been used for stabilization, and it has only been slightly filtered. Therefore, especially after a long ageing, a natural deposit might appear on the bottom of the bottle, which does not affect the quality of the wine.
