This wine is not labeled Riserva, but it could be for all practical purposes. The Mastrojanni 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino has a dry quality of fruit, more brittle, if you will, with fallen autumn leaves, wild game, underbrush, hard salami and black pepper. Like many of the Brunellos from 2018, the primary fruit is not as bright. The tannins are finely textured, but I probably wouldn't age the 2018s as long as I would the 2019s or the 2016s. The last time this wine was made was in 2016, in fact. With this vintage, we have 6,000 bottles.

This has an attractive nose of fresh and sour cherries, orange peel, licorice, mocha, nutmeg and porcini mushrooms. It's full-bodied with ultra-fine, sleek tannins. Lots of flavor here, with delicious sweet spice complementing the red berry fruit on a long, seamless and polished finish. Even better after 2023.

Supple and vibrant, this red exhibits cherry, strawberry, rose hip, sanguine and leafy flavors. Balanced overall, ending with light, chalky tannins. Ready to drink, but there's no rush.

Mastrojanni has been writing history with its wines since 1975, collecting awards from all over the world. Today, thanks to an exceptional terroir and men who have believed in it for decades, Mastrojanni has become one of the most respected Montalcino producers. The Mastrojanni winery lies in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the south eastern most corner of Montalcino Municipality, in the Province of Siena. An artistic and architectural heritage, surrounded by the majesty of its natural landscapes and, above all, an area particularly suitable for vine cultivation: the homeland of Brunello.

          Tasting notes
The intensity and brightness of summer 2015 brought the old vines of Sangiovese to the maximum expression, giving us a wine of great personality, guided by compact and ripe tannins, never astringent, which culminate in a unique finish for elegance and depth. From one of Montalcino’s most celebrated single-vineyards, the Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d’Asino (“donkey’s back”) comes from a one-hectare hillside crest that runs roughly south to north and enjoys magnificent exposures. This is a seriously elegant and sophisticated effort with gorgeous layering that sees plush fruit pitted carefully next to savory spice and smoke.
