Estate
Founded in 1983 by Cinzia Merli and her late husband Eugenio Campolmi, Le Macchiole is situated in the Bolgheri DOC area, on the Tuscan coast. Le Macchiole has 54 acres of vineyards and is known for crafting single variety wines made from 100% Cabernet Franc, 100% Merlot and 100% Syrah. Le Macchiole is notable for being the first winery in the region to produce a monovariety Cabernet Franc wine, and the first to adopt high density planting. Cinzia manages the winery and estate with her brother
Massimo Merli, winemaker Luca Rettondini and with her son Elia working alongside them.
Vineyard
Paleo Rosso is sourced from four of the estate's five vineyards: Puntone, Casa Nuova, Vignone and Madonnina.
Vinification
Paleo Rosso is aged for 20 days in concrete vats and also sees 14 months in oak barrels with 75% new and 25% second passage. It was bottled in April of 2013, and aged for 17 months in bottle before release.
Vintage
The 2011 vintage represents an ideal vintage for cabernet franc, expressing the best characteristics of this variety which is the symbol of Le Macchiole. The vines had grapes ripening practically perfectly with very thick skins yet crisp pips; these quality parameters allowed for a long skin
maceration and slow extraction. The Paleo Rosso denotes the unique characteristics of this variety with voluminous, structured tannins, an intense flavor profile, classic cabernet franc aroma - all very persuasive.
Wine
Named for the local wild grass that once covered its vineyards, Paleo Rosso is a landmark expression of Italian Cabernet Franc. Eugenio Campolmi had long dreamt of creating a unique wine that would
stand apart from the rest of Bolgheri, and converted this wine from a blend to 100% Cabernet Franc in 2001.
