Le Macchiole - Bolgheri Rosso 2015
Wine
Bolgheri Rosso is a fresh and elegant blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The most recent addition to Le Macchiole's range, this wine has been produced since the 2004 vintage. Considered the winery’s calling card, it boasts a great quality to price ratio.
Estate
Founded in 1983 by Cinzia Merli and her late husband Eugenio Campolmi, Le Macchiole is situated in the Bolgheri DOC area, on the Tuscan coast. Le Macchiole has 54 acres of vineyards and is known for crafting single variety wines made from 100% Cabernet Franc, 100% Merlot and 100% Syrah. Le
Macchiole is notable for being the first winery in the region to produce a monovariety Cabernet Franc wine, and the first to adopt high density planting. Cinzia manages the winery and estate with her brother Massimo Merli, winemaker Luca Rettondini and with her son Elia working alongside
them.
Vineyard
Bolgheri Rosso is sourced from four of the estate's five vineyards: Puntone, Casa Nuova, Vignone and Madonnina.
Vinification
The wine was fermented in stainless steel and aged for 10 months in a combination of oak and concrete (80% in second and third passage barrique and 20% in concrete).
Vintage
For the first time, the Bolgheri Rosso blend includes Cabernet Sauvignon. It was planted three years ago and is finally starting to bear fruit. The Cabernet will play an important role in our Bolgheri Rosso wine from now on, as it is a late-ripening variety that will allow Le Macchiole to make the wine more elegant and harmonious. The Bolgheri Rosso 2015 blend is the following: 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah.
