Technical Details

Estate

Petrolo is located in Mercatale Valdarno, in the center of the triangle made by Florence, Siena and Arezzo. There are no notable wine estates nearby, but with the romance and poetry that wine brings, Petrolo exemplifies a theme seen more and more in Tuscany: little pockets, special places where extraordinary and singular wines can be made. This Estate was bought by the Bazzocchi family in the 1940s and since the mid 80s has been headed by Lucia Bazzocchi Sanjust with the assistance of her son Luca who is now managing the winery. The technical agronomist is Carlo Nesterini, the oenologist is Stefano Guidi and since June 2002, Carlo Ferrini has been collaborating on agricultural and vinification issues.

Vineyard

The recent vineyards were planted under extremely rigorous guidelines based on the number of vines per hectare and on strict zoning. The yield per plant is notably restricted (max 2.5 lbs per vine plant), allowing a concentration of all the noble components of the grape, fundamental for the full-bodied character of this wine.

Vinification

The maceration of the skin lasts more than 14 days. Pump overs are done with considerable care to allow the complete extraction of anthocyanins and polyphenols from the skins. Usually the malolactic fermentation takes place regularly, partly in French oak barriques of first, second and third year, partly in 40 Hl oak barrels and partly in enamelled cement vats . By the first days of December the wine begins its aging period. The wine rests in French oak barriques and tonneaux of first, second and third year and in 40 Hl oak barrels of around 10 years, for approximately 15 months. During this phase the wine is left for the first 6 months on the fine lees. After bottling, the wine begins its usual refinement period of about 6 months.

Wine

Torrione is made mainly from Sangiovese coming from a combination of historic vines of the 70s and ones more recently planted. The 2013 is a blend of Sangiovese (80%), Merlot (15%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%).
