Fairly neutral at first sniff, then focused on green apples, yellow peaches and stony minerals. Light-bodied, it shines with silky texture that's perfectly balanced by crisp acidity. Chalkier in the finish. Drink now.

Vinous Media 93

The 2020 Appius Bianco mixes 60% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Grigio, 10% Pinot Bianco and 10% Sauvignon Blanc to create a dusty blend of dried flowers, sliced pears and crushed stone. It is pure and polished in feel with white pit fruits and sweet spices that swirl throughout. Long and gently structured, this leaves a crunch of minerals and a citrus twang that lingers with incredible persistence.

The St. Michael-Eppan 2020 Alto Adige Appius is a blend of 60% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Grigio, 10% Pinot Bianco and 10% Sauvignon Blanc that underlies the magnificence of Alto Adige winemaking. This blend is generous and rich, yet it also shows the tension and etched minerality that the Dolomites are known for. The bouquet caresses with creamy notes of peach, pastry filling and poached apple. That fleshy fruit is intersected by elegant salinity. It ages in barrique and tonneaux for 12 months, followed by three years in steel drums.

A rich white, with a generous range of Jonagold apple, melon and yellow peach fruit, plus a toasty vein of vanilla, brioche, honey and hazelnut. Deftly honed acidity provides a mouthwatering check for the well-oaked profile, working in tandem with a minerally underpinning of chalk, stone and salt notes to keep this focused through the refreshing, lasting finish. Background

With its tenth edition, "APPIUS" is crowned the cult wine of the St. Michael-Eppan winery. The 2019 vintage was blessed with an ideal summer and autumn, allowing Hans Terzer to create a new masterpiece. The impressive cuvee is characterised by a broad range of aromas, exquisite light reflections and clarity, but above all by an exceptional complexity and elegance.

Food pairing

Excellent accompaniment to strong fish dishes such as turbot or monkfish. Goes well with mushroom and truffle dishes, fine white meat and game. Also wonderful with creamy and mature cheeses. Serve between 8 to 10 degrees Celcius.

End of September to early October.

Tasting notes

On the palate ithere is a distinct intensity and richness; straightforward and direct, precise and well defined, solid and compact when drinking. Softness and acidity balance in perfect harmony. The Chardonnay grapes provide an extraordinary aromatic abundance of tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, papaya). Pinot Grigio and Pinot Blanc are evidenced by echoes of white-fleshed fruits such as quince and Williams pear.

Vinification

Placed in barrique-tonneaux for alcoholic and malolactic fermentation (except Sauvignon). Assemblage takes place after one year, followed by another three years of maturation in stainless-steel tanks with fine yeast.
