Estate

Tommasi is historically and today a standard bearer of the Amarone appellation, and one of the most important quality producers in the Veneto. The family-run estate was founded in 1902 by Giacomo Tommasi in the village of Pedemonte, which lies in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico region. The family owns 284 acres in Valpolicella Classico, making them the single largest land owners in the area. Over the years they have expanded their holdings in other areas of the Veneto, and now own 370 acres. As has been the case since the winery’s establishment, the family works only with grapes they grow, an important quality decision and reflection of their deep connection to the Valpolicella soil.

Vineyard

The estate’s holdings are concentrated in two main vineyard sites: Le Fornaci, which lies close to the lake, just 2 miles south of Sirmione, the famous resort town of Lake Garda, and San Martino, which is located further inland. The soils at the Le Fornaci site are characterized by a particularly dense clay, which contributes a greater sense of structure to the wines, while the soils at San Martino are sandier and tend to produce wines with more intense aromas. In 2013, the Tommasi family expanded both vineyards, buying additional land from their neighbors and planting new vines. They now own a total of 112 acres in Lugana, making them one of the top 5 land-owners in the region. The 2016 vintage of Le Fornaci was sourced from grapes coming exclusively coming from the Le Fornaci vineyard, while the 2017 was made with grapes from both vineyards.

Vinification

The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks for approximately 7 days. It then matures in tank for a further 5 months before being bottled.

Wine

Le Fornaci is a new release from Lugana, a trendy, growing appellation on the southern shores of Lake Garda. Tommasi has long owned an estate in the village of San Martino della Battaglia, where for the past 25 years they have produced elegant white wines made from the indigenous Turbiana grape. Recent genetic studies have shown that the grape is genetically identical to Verdicchio, the signature grape of Le Marche. However, in the unique clay-rich soils and moderate climate of Lugana, the variety has taken on a personality all its own, and is therefore considered a different biotype. It is known to produce full-flavored wines with citrusy flavors and high acidity, capable of aging for more than a decade.
