Estate
The firm of E. Guigal, located in Ampuis, was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal. Since 1961 his son Marcel has led the estate, and his unparalleled work ethic and dedication to quality have brought attention to Cote-Rotie and other appellations throughout the Rhone that were in danger of being lost, and lifted the Guigal wines to the pinnacle of the wine world. Today, Marcel’s son Philippe serves as Director and Oenologist, continuing the tradition of leadership in the Rhone Valley and uncompromising excellence.
Tasting notes
Deep dark ruby colour with a nose of black fruits, leather, coffee and spices. Powerful and rich on the palate with structured tannins, while still expressing the terroir with its finesse.
Vineyard
The grapes are come from four steepsloped vineyards: Bessards (30%), Greffieux (30%), L’Hermite (20%), and Murets (20%). The vines at these sites average 40-90 years in age, and the soil types range from clay to granite to alluvial. Yields are 35 Hl/hectare.
Vinification
The 100% Syrah wine undergoes a fourweek maceration and pump-overs, followed by extended barrel aging for 42 months in new French oak. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration, creating a wine of that represents the pinnacle of the appellation, with exceptional concentration and great potential longevity.
Wine
Hermitage Ex-Voto represents the fulfillment of a longtime dream of Guigal to own his own vineyards on the hill of Hermitage. Through the purchase of the de Vallouit and J. L. Grippat domaines in 2000,
Guigal acquired four vineyard parcels on this legendary site. The 2001 vintage was the first release of this estate-bottled Hermitage red and white.
