Estate
This Languedoc winery is owned by Pichon-Longueville of Bordeaux fame. The vineyards of Mas Belles Eaux stretch over 90 hectares of hillsides in the Languedoc, where they benefit from a varied, complex terroir of Villafranchian gravel over red clay and alluvial soils. The estate was called Belles Eaux because of the numerous springs around the property which run down into the Peyne River, which has a unique effect on the terroir and provide their freshness to the wines of Mas Belles Eaux.
Vineyard
The Mas Belles Eaux wines come from two vineyards at the estate: the Mas Belles Eaux vineyard, and the Sainte Helene vineyard. These two vineyards stretch over 200 acres of sun-blessed hillsides that are bathed in light and benefit from variations in topsoils and subsoils and have fantastic natural drainage. In addition, winds come down the slopes, drying and cooling the grapes.
Vinification
The fruit comes from selected plots about halfway up the hillsides of the estate. The heat stored during the day on these gravely hillsides is released when evening comes, enabling an optimal maturity for the grapes. Vines in this well drained soil send roots deep in the earth to seek the nutrients they need, giving a rich and complex structure to the wine. Fermentation is in concrete vats and stainless steelm and a long maceration enables a harmonious tannic structure. Aging is for around 15 months in 1, 2 & 3 year old French Oak barrels.
