Domaine Frédéric Esmonin, from Burgundy's Gevrey-Chambertain appellation, is a true family collaboration that consists of Frederic, his father, André, and his mother, Michele. They have been farming their 10-acres of family vineyards for generations and selling their fruit to the likes of Drouhin, Jadot, and Leroy. In 1988 they began to commercialize their own labels today they are producing consistently high-quality, beautiful wines that represent a great value considering their pedigree.
After a short cold maceration gives the wines an extra dimension of fruit, they are aged in carefully selected French oak barrels of Allier and Nevers forest wood made by Radoux and Berthomieu, two of the very best coopers. Wines are aged in barrels of varying age and toast and then blended in order to achieve optimum balance and complexity.
This is a polished and profound expression of this tiny, 3.25-hectare Grand Cru vineyard. Domaine Frédéric Esmonin’s parcel 50+ year old vines from the Grand Cru vineyard “Ruchottes-Chambertin” sits directly below the parcel owned by Domaine Armand Rousseau, one of Burgundy’s most hallowed properties. Wines from Ruchottes-Chambertin are by definition extremely rare, with multiple properties bottling wines from it (including other heavy hitters like Roumier and Mugneret-Gibourg). Esmonin’s comes in at about a third of the price of those others and the quality is there, it is luscious, aromatically complex, top-flight red Burgundy in every way.
Very alluring, offering saturated cherry and wild berry fruit, with sandalwood, tobacco and mineral flavors. Beautifully balanced and approachable now, with an embedded solid structure.
