This is a structured rich wine. It has great ripe fruit, generous with red berry and acidity in fine balance. It has a solid backbone of tannins although these are already well integrated into the opulent wine. -Wine Enthusiast

Description

From one of the lesser-known Beaune Premier Crus, this wine is named after the vineyard's red soil. The clay and limestone soils and the ideal aspect of these vineyards consistently produce an excellent wine year after year.

History

Château de Santenay is one of Burgundy’s largest wine domaines. Its prestigious heritage, which comprises a remarkable Château with a glazed tile roof and 90 hectares of vineyards, is the product of a time-old legacy that is closely tied to the history of the Burgundy wine region. This remarkable château, with its varnished tiles, is a spectacular piece of heritage closely tied to the region’s history. Its vineyards are split between the Côte d’Or and Côte Chalonnaise. The diversity of its ‘climats’ results in a rich palette of wines with distinctive styles that reflect the subtleties of the Burgundy varietals.

Terroir

The land on the hillside has a very beautiful terroir. The clay makes up most of the soil alongside the presence of limestone pavement ensuring good drainage. The good cultural practices have earned Chateay de Santenay the certified "Quality France" and "Terra Vitis" titles. The tillage by plowing, permanent grassing and the removal of herbicides ensure an active biological life of the soils. Leaf stripping and green harvesting allow yields to be controlled and the plant to be in good health through aeration of the grapes.

Vinification

Beaune is the capital of Bourgogne’s winegrowing region. The wines of Beaune are complete, fleshy, velvety wines with a fine vinosity and generous sap.
