A cornucopia of ripe black cherries and blackberries here, married to full, supple and beautifully integrated tannins and just enough acidity to prevent it tipping over into sweetness. Long, silky finish. Second wine of Château Léoville Poyferré. A blend of 61 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 27 per cent merlot, eight per cent petit verdot and four per cent cabernet franc. Drink or hold.

The estate has also turned out a fabulous second wine, The 2016 Pavillon de Leoville Poyferre is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc. It's a ripe, fleshy, full-bodied beauty that has a wealth of fruit and texture as well as classy notes of blackberries, cedar, forest floor, and lead pencil shavings. Layered, fleshy yet also elegant, with soft tannins, it has real character and I suspect will keep for 15-20 years.
