Reviews

James Suckling 93

Green olives, spices and currants on the nose. Full body, with velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Lovely layers of ripe tannins and ripe fruit.

Vinous Media 92

The 2009 Meyney marks the point where I believe the wines become more interesting. The nose features ample red berry fruit, red plum, raspberry preserve and sloes mixed with Christmas cake and earthy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and quite Haut-Marbuzet in style, leading to a lush but very nicely structured, lightly spiced finish that reveals cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. This is definitely worth seeking out.

Wine Advocate 92

I clearly underrated this wine from barrel. The finest wine made at this estate since 1982, this opaque black wine is a sleeper of the vintage, with oodles of blackberry fruit interwoven with hints of charcoal, forest floor, licorice and damp earth. Deep, rich, chewy, full-bodied and opulent, this is a fabulous Meyney that, because of its low acidity and very ripe tannin, can be drunk in 3-4 years or cellared for two decades.

Technical Details

Climatic conditions

2009 gathered all the conditions that outstanding vintages require! Rainfall was noticeably deficient, exceptionally high sunshine hours until the month of March, a very sunny Summer until September, allowing for the perfect ripening of the grapes and great concentration of aromas.

Tasting notes

Good intensity with deep red colour and purple tinges. Enticing nose of cassis and spices. Expressive bouquet. The palate reveals a well-structured and balanced wine with clear-cut flavours, dense middle palate and ripe, silky tannins. Great vintage for cellaring.

Vinification

Following hand-picking and selection of the grapes on the vines, they are de-stalked and carefully sorted once more. Fermentation is carried out in temperature controlled stainless-steel or concrete tanks. After blending, the wine is aged from 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 30% to 40% of which are new.
