Reviews

James Suckling 93

Spices, nutmeg, dark fruits on the nose, follow through to a full body, with very precise tannins and a long finish. A beautiful and racy wine. Second wine of Cos d'Estournel.

by JS, James Suckling , 2012

Wine Advocate 94

The brilliant 2009 Les Pagodes de Cos actually has more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend than the grand vin (69% versus 65%) in addition to mostly Merlot and a small quantity of Petit Verdot. As powerful as the Cos in terms of alcoholic clout (14.5%), the full-bodied, round, generous Les Pagodes de Cos exhibits lots of creme de cassis and floral notes intermixed with hints of wood/barrique and spice.

by RP, Wine Advocate , 2012

Wine Spectator 91

Remarkably lush and supple for the appellation, yet not lacking in density, with rich plum, cassis and blackberry confiture notes leading the way and flickers of charcoal, tobacco and singed iron keeping the almost-flattering finish honest. Approachable, but this should knit nicely with mid-term cellaring. Drink now through 2023. 10,000 cases made. –JM

Technical Details

Les Pagodes De Cos

Les Pagodes de Cos is, strictly speaking, Cos d'Estournel's "second wine". The vines that produce it are eventually used for the "Grand Vin" which is an 1855 Grand Cru Classé. They are grown on the same terroir and are treated in the same way.
They are simply younger and their roots have yet to grow to their full depth in the gravelly soil. Powerful, very aromatic, long on the palate, with a very persistent finish, Les Pagodes de Cos is a wine of refinement and pleasure, to be drunk within ten years of its bottling at the chateau.

Tasting notes

A rich nose with a hint of toffee. Very ripe fruit. Rich, generous. Delicious with a blueberry and cassis flavour and savoury on the back end.

Vintage

2009 will go down in the annals as a year with very little rainfall.
The year began with a particularly cold winter, though with very little rain. We could already see that the water reserves of our great clayey terroirs were significantly less than usual. This deficiency on our terrain of clayey limestone, on which our great Merlot are at their best, gave us to suppose a harvest of exceptional quality.
The beginning of spring was very cold and with light rainfall. From early May, one could notice a sharp rise in temperature.
Summer was characterized by pleasant sunny days. Between August 1st and 31st, temperatures were even higher than the average over the last ten years and the famous 2003!
By mid-september, rainfall levels were comparable to 2005. In fact, it is mostly thanks to the very low rainfall that the 2009 vintage is so exceptional.
Thanks to the total gravity system of our new cellar, we were able to control this exceptionally tannin-rich harvest.
