Reviews
James Suckling 95
Blackcurrants and walnuts with sweet berry and cherry undertones. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Linear and intense tannins run the length of the wine with intensity and persistence.

Vinous Media 95
The 2019 Grand Puy Ducasse is class personified. Just as in barrel, from bottle Grand-Puy Ducasse possesses terrific freshness and energy in place of the heavy, extracted style that was the norm just a few years ago. Readers will find a Pauillac endowed with tons of transparency and tons of sheer class. The 2019 is wonderfully sophisticated in every way. I loved it.

Wine Enthusiast 95
From one of the lesser-known Pauillac crus classes, this wine shows plenty of fine structure as well as ripe black currant fruits from the Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. It is also the succulent fruitiness that shines, lending to a good future.

Wine Spectator 93
Well-packed, showing black currant and blackberry fruit flavors, which are marked by bramble and savory accents and carried by fresh acidity through a finish that's scored by humus, tobacco and iron. A textbook, austere, driven and age-worthy Pauillac. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Wine Advocate 90
The 2019 Grand-Puy-Ducasse exhibits aromas of raspberries, currants and fruit liqueur mingled with subtle hints of loamy soil and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and demonstrative, with an ample core of fruit, ripe tannins and lively acids and a finish subtly marked by alcoholic warmth, this is more elegant than its muscular, powerful 2018 predecessor; but it's held back by that touch of alcoholic heat. The new ambition that's animating this historically lackluster estate, however, is more than evident, and there are surely great things to come from this address.

History
Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse's story began when Arnaud Ducasse bought a "modest" house
on the banks of the river in Pauillac in 1675. Little did he know that it would become a large
estate that would remain in his family for almost three centuries. Pierre Ducasse, a lawyer
with a passion for wine, considerably extended the land over three parishes - Pauillac,
Saint-Lambert and Saint-Sauveur - and three seigneuries: Lafite, Latour and Beychevelle. In
1820, his son built the Château's winery facing the Gironde estuary. At the time, this was a
daring decision: Grand-Puy Ducasse would be the only Chateau in the area to vinify its
grapes for 200 years. In 1855, the property was included in the prestigious classification of
great growths; with 40 hectares of vines spread over 11 different types of soil, its vineyard
can be considered as the most representative of the diversity of Pauillac's terroirs. Since
the 1990s, major investments have been made in restructuring the vineyard. In 2004, CA
Grands Crus, a subsidiary of the Credit Agricole Group, has embarked on an ambitious
optimization plan. The subsequent construction of a new vat room and barrel storage
facilities completed the "Renaissance" plan. The guiding principle of Château Grand-Puy
Ducasse and its teams lead by Anne Le Naour and Benjamin Cassoulet is to push rigorous
standards even further.
Winery Technical Data
2019 is a very fine vintage, a solar one!
A dry and milder than average winter gave way to a rainy spring with cool nights. Bud burst
and flowering therefore came relatively early. The vineyard remained in a very good state
of health. As in 2016 and 2018, the summer was characterised by high temperatures, with
a few scattered showers (two redeeming spells of rain in July and August). It is a vintage of
the climate, as much as of the terroir. The grapes are excellent and with a richness that we
would like to find every year.
