Reviews

Decanter 92

Classic slightly dusty blackcurrant nose. Vibrant, salty stone textured, so you get a gentle grip from the tannins but a salty, savoury element to them. Balanced and elegant, good freshness and style.

by TP, Decanter , 2023

Jancis Robinson 16+

Well-crafted wine, if a little sober, with layered fruit and integrated vanilla oak. Persistent, balanced, the tannins finely honed. Ageing potential.

by JL, Jancis Robinson , 2020

James Suckling 92

Currant, plum, red-tea and oyster-shell aromas. It's medium-bodied with sleek tannins and crisp acidity. Fresh, succulent and lightly saline finish.

by JS, James Suckling , 2021

Wine Enthusiast 92

Associated with Larose-Trintaudon, this estate has produced a dense wine. Rich tannins, spice, blackberry fruits and smoky acidity are all set for good aging. The wine's concentration is impressive.

by RV, Wine Enthusiast , 2021

Vinous Media 91

The 2018 Larose Perganson is flat-out delicious. Sweet floral aromatics meld into a core of ripe, red toned fruit. Cedar, tobacco and grilled herbs develop later. adding pretty layers of savoriness. Beautifully long and persistent through to the finish, Larose Perganson is a winner in 2018.

Technical Details

Description

The historic terroir of Domaine de Perganson is the result of an audacious project of the King’s advisor, Jean-Pierre de Pontet, who purchased the land in 1719 to plant vines. Today this estate of originality and great promise is under the guardianship of Vignobles de Larose. Although the chateau building which once stood here disappeared in the turmoil of the Second World War, its wine is still produced with the greatest respect for the earth and for its history.

Whilst the absence of its own independent winemaking cellars precluded it from being classified “Exceptionnel”, it received the honor of being classified a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur. The selection is made by an independent panel of experts and will be reviewed every five years. Several factors are considered including agricultural, environmental and technical as well as site visits. Multiple vintages are then blind tasted from each Chateau to determine the final classification. The first labels to carry the new classification will be featured on the 2018 vintage labels.

Estate

During an Auction in 1719, Jean-Pierre du Pontet, Counselor to the King, acquires the Estate of Perganson. He adds this property to Langoa and Canet which he already owned. At his death, his oldest son M. Pontet de Canet inherits his properties in Saint-Julien; his younger son, M. Pontet-Perganson, in turn inherits the Château in Saint-Laurent. The first brokering of the great wines of Perganson was done by the Lawton courtier in 1742. Its market price regularly put it at the 5th Classified Growth level. The name of Larose st appears in the 1830’s, after Henry Delaroze, co-inheritor of future Gruaud-Larose in Saint-Julien, becomes owner of erganson as well in 1815. Pontet-Perganson then becomes Larose-Perganson. In 1986, Allianz purchases the Estate, partaking in the tremendous potential of its terroir.

Tasting Notes

Dark ruby red with purple glints. Immense aromatic complexity in a register of fresh red fruit (strawberry, raspberry, redcurrant), white fruit and fragrant hyacinth. Full bodied and mouth filling, it has perfect, almost magical balance. An excellent structure of sleek tannins gives the impression of endless persistence.

Vinification

Classic three week initial fermentation. Aged in oak barrels for 12 to 16 months.
