Vintage
This is a vintage that expresses wonderfully all that biodynamics can bring to a wine. The structure is chiseled, serrated, Gothic. The power is there but expresses without demonstration. The wine has nothing to prove. I like wines that, like some paintings, contain and give without fuss their full power. The 2014 is all about verticality, length and tension, without the slightest austerity. The effects of biodynamics are also felt in the precision and freshness of the fruit quite exceptional. Fonroque shows here a particularly refined facet of the potential of its terroir.
Tasting notes
The purple garnet color is beautiful. The nose is complex (cherries, wild strawberries, coffee, old roses) fine and refined. The palate is juicy, lively and fresh. The touch of mouth is fleshy and caressing. This vintage expresses itself in verticality, with a pleasant limestone tension, a beautiful minerality and salty notes.
Weather
The season started favorably with early budding. Flowering took place during a dry and sunny June. Summer was more chaotic, cool and stormy. The vine was late and the véraison extended over a long period. By the end of August, a particularly warm weather settled fairly long to lead to an unusually mild autumn. The thermal amplitudes were important and favorable to the maturity of seeds and dandruff. The time remaining dry, the berries were well concentrated.
