Tasting notes
Impressive, highly concentrated bright ruby colour with hints of purple and crimson. The nose is intense, developing aromas of blackcurrants, plums, spices and a superb deep, dense fruitiness. After a dense attack, the palate offers fine tannins, with great depth, perfect harmony, and excellent balance. Very fruity, the mid-palate is both rich and fresh, developing superb structure with complex flavours of dark fruit, tobacco, spices and an exquisite finish with just a hint of leather. Exceptional potential, already offering a magnificent expression of the terroir.
The 2009 vintage
The 2009 vintage benefited from excellent, if not perfect conditions! The winter and spring were dry and mild. Flowering was uniform and exceptionally fast with all varieties flowering in late May, resulting in a harmonious start of the ripening phase. Such a combination of positive factors –a prerequisite for the composition of refined, elegant tannins - (uniform veraison, sunshine and warmth offset by cool nights, and perfect humidity) has not been seen for 30 years, particularly during the crucial months of August, September and early October! Reinforced by the growing techniques practised since 1997 at the Chateau sustainable farming, monitoring of the ripeness plot-by-plot, minimum use of treatment, etc...) the Malartic-Lagraviere 2009, both Red and White, have huge potential, and will undoubtedly develop over many glorious years.
