Reviews

James Suckling 94

This marries a dash (5%) of still red wine from the Bollinger vineyards with the house's stalwart, complex non-vintage cuvee to fine effect. It has playful red florals and citrus fruits on the nose with freshly grilled hazelnuts, wild berries and spiced-berry biscuits. Actually, it smells superb! The palate offers plenty of concentrated red-apple and bright light-cherry fruit flavors amid a balanced and lively frame. A Champagne that finishes smooth and fresh. Brilliant take on a fresher style.

Vinous Media 91

Bright orange-pink. Fresh red berries and tangerine on the spice- and smoke-accented nose and in the mouth. Sappy and expansive, offering juicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a touch of toasty lees. Tightens up on the long, mineral-driven finish, which leaves a chalky mineral nuance behind.

Wine Spirits 92

The pink color comes from the addition of six percent red wine, while the red fruit flavors are inherent in the blend (62 percent pinot noir, 14 percent meunier and 24 percent chardonnay). This feels cool and generous in its ripe red berry flavors, then extremely dry in its red spice finish. Notes of honey and leather add complexity, focusing the wine on roast squab stuffed with wild mushrooms.

Wine Spectator 93

This refined rose shows verve, offering finely meshed flavors of dried black cherry and pomegranate fruit, with notes of almond skin, gingerbread, honey and candied orange zest. A vein of smoky minerality gains momentum on the lasting finish.

Wine Advocate 90

The latest release of Bollinger's NV Brut Rosé is also showing well, revealing scents of yellow orchard fruit, candied orange peel, pear, dried white flowers and spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with good depth at the core, a youthfully frothy mousse and bright balancing acids, concluding with a dry, chalky finish. The Rosé is based on the Special Cuvée blend, with the addition of red wine from Bollinger's vineyards in Verzenay and their famous monopole La Cote aux Enfants.

History

The Bollinger House also makes magnificent red wines, such as the legendary Cote aux Enfants, in Ay. Bollinger Rose was only just created in 2008. This Rose is especially distinct because it uses only 8% of still red wine, as opposed to 15-20% many others will use. Bollinger is known for their magnificent still red wine, Côte aux Enfants, and uses the same rigor in making a red from the Poirier Saint-Pierre and Montboeuf plots in Verzenay to make the red for this NV Rose Because only great wines make great champagnes.

Tasting notes

Color: Bronze tones combined with the intense depth of a great red wine.
Nose: The nobility of red berries: hints of red currant, cherry and wild strawberry ; a spicy touch, not unlike Special Cuvee.
Palate: A subtle combination of structure, length and vivacity, with a tannic finish due to the addition of red wine; bubbles as fine as velvet; flavours of wild berries.
With its intimate and unusual flavours, Bollinger Rosé can be served for afternoon tea, Bollinger style. It is also perfect for a picnic on a summer afternoon, as a predinner drink or served with a fruity and tart dessert. To fully appreciate its unique style, bouquet and aromas, Bollinger Rosé is best served between 10 and 12°C. Enjoy it now!
