2009 Bordeaux doesn't need any more hype. It's time for the finished wines to live up to their early promise. And based on this small early set of releases, so far so good.

Owner Jean Guyon has a trio of wines here-all of which feature sleek, racy raspberry fruit nicely integrated with judicious toast—the Chateau Rollan de By is his main property, with his smaller Chateau Tour Seran and Chateau La Clare located nearby in the upper reaches of the Medoc. Consulting winemakers Riccardo Cotarella and Alain Reynaud lend their efforts here.

The long-standing Andre Lurton family of wines checks in as well, with their Chateau Dauzac, Chateau Couhins-Lurton, Chateau de Cruzeau and Chateau La Louviere. All show a common thread of ripe, smoldering black currant and tar notes offset by lively acidity and lingering mineral streaks.

Chateau la Croix Lartigue La Croix Lartigue Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux 2009 Score: 91 | $23

Very expressive, with velvety-textured boysenberry, linzer torte and cassis flavors all gliding along, with toasty spice, plum cake and anise notes hanging through the finish. Drink now through 2016. 1,330 cases made.—J.M.

Chateau Rollan de By Rollan de By Medoc 2009 Score: 91 | $35

Very fleshy, this delicious red shows plum, raspberry and blackberry notes backed by spice cake, anise and toasty vanilla. The finish is long and polished. Drink now through 2017. 3,500 cases imported.—J.M.
