One of the oldest port houses, Quinta do Noval is also arguably the greatest. It is unique among top port houses in that most of its ports are made from estate-grown fruit and, notably, all of the vintage Noval wines are from the single Quinta do Noval vineyard. And it is difficult to discuss Noval with mentioning Nacional, the legendary vintage port made from a 6 acre parcel of ungrafted vines, and the most collectible and sought after port in the world. In the early 1990s, Noval changed ownership for only the second time in its three-hundred year history and began a massive program of improvements while re-committing to the traditional, and best, methods of port production.
Vineyard
From the finest vineyard in Portugal's wild and remote Douro Valley, Noval BLACK is the greatest innovation in port seen in the last fifty years. After 15 tireless years of work re-planting this legendary estate, Noval is seeing fruit at a quality level exceeding its highest expectations. These new generation grapes are the foundation for Noval's great vintage ports, and have also enabled the development of Noval BLACK, a new port that showcases the tremendous Noval terroir.
Vinification
Noval BLACK varietals are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Cao. 50% of the grapes were trodden by foot in lagares, and the rest was vinified by pump overs in stainless steel vats. The wine spends 2 years in the barrels.
