Tasting notes
The Smoke Stack Sauvignon Blanc 2012 is pale yellow in colour with green hues. There are strong aromas of grapefruit, gooseberry and crushed herbs with a delicate mix of tomato and blackcurrant leaf. The palate has wonderful vibrancy and fruit weight, perfectly balanced with crisp and clean acidity culminating in a lengthy finish.
Winemaking notes
The 2012 harvest began 17 days later than the previous year due to a colder growing season and the fruit taking longer to reach optimum ripeness. The cooler temperatures also resulted in significantly lower crop levels with most vineyards being pruned to three canes, producing more concentrated fruit flavours. April saw a month of superb weather which allowed the fruit to fully mature and the winemakers were able to select which blocks to harvest without the added stress of rain. The juice from all vineyards was fermented separately at relatively cool temperatures using selected aromatic yeast strains. At the end of fermentation, the winemakers
tasted and evaluated each wine prior to blending which helps them make plans for each vineyard in the year ahead. The 2012 blend comes from 40 separate and contract grown vineyards which are spread over the length and breadth of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley. This broad range of vineyards ensures a multi-dimensional aroma and flavour spectrum, from punchy, pungent and tropical through to elegant, crisp and green. We believe this is a true representation of Marlborough sauvignon blanc.
