Vineyard
Grapes for the Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc are grown on six vineyards in the Wairau Valley. Yields are low, and the grapes are hand-harvested. Marlborough’s Wairau Valley is the major grape growing region of New Zealand, a confined geographical area at the northern tip of the South Island. Abundant sunshine, low rainfall and cool autumn nights characterize the long growing season, enabling the slow evolution of a rich array of vibrant fruit flavors. The clay soil profile yields a wine with more defined citrus characteristics than the more common gravel soils.
Wine
Dog Point Vineyard wines are hand-crafted from estate fruit grown on some of the oldest vines and best sites in Marlborough, some plantings dating back to the 1970s. These older well-established vines situated on free draining silty clay loams are supplemented with fruit from closely planted hillside vines with a clay loam influence.
Vinification
The grapes are whole-cluster pressed, then fermented in stainless steel tanks. 80% of the juice is inoculated with pure wine yeast strains and the remaining 20% is allowed to ferment naturally using indigenous yeasts.. After fermentation is complete the tanks are kept full and left to settle on yeast lees for 2-3 months prior to being blended and bottled. Fresh and intensely concentrated, this wine can be enjoyed young or cellared for several years.
