Winery Technical Data
Persistent and enticing, Altero stands out for its complexity and richness, as well as its elegance and wonderful approachability.
Altero (which means “self-confident” in Italian) was created in 1983. The intention was to make a more modern style of Brunello. Altero is a proprietary wine that is aged in 500-liter tonneaux of French oak for a period of two years. Altero completes its aging requirement by refining in the bottle for at least another two years prior to release. For many years Altero had to be labelled as a "simple" I.G.T. because the wine was spending only two years in wood and not the 3.5 years required. Starting from the 1995 vintage, the DOCG rules changed, reducing the minimum aging in wood to 2 years. This allowed Altero to officially be labelled as a Brunello di Montalcino, as every other rule of the appellation had always been respected.
