Petrolo - Inarno 2013
Tasting note
Aromas of blueberry, lavender and lemon peel follow through to a medium body,
with tangy citrus acidity and a long, bright finish. Delicious, good-value red from
Petrolo, which also makes Torrione and Galatrona. Drink or hold.
Vineyard
Inarno, which refers to the land around the
River Arno, is a new collaborative project
between Petrolo and 10-15 neighboring
growers in the area of Val d’ Arno di Sopra.
There is tremendous old vine Sangiovese
here that, in many instances, suffers the
fate of being blended with inferior grapes
and wines into generic Chianti. Essentially,
Inarno is a wine at the price of an “industrial”
product produced with the criteria of an
authentic hand-crafted wine, thanks in part
to the stregnth of many small producers
willing to give Petrolo their grapes, aware
that a product like this can only enhance the
reputation of the newly created DOC.
Estate
Petrolo is located in Mercatale Valdarno, in
the center of the triangle made by Florence,
Siena and Arezzo. There are no notable
wine estates nearby, but with the romance
and poetry that wine brings, Petrolo
exemplifies a theme seen more and more
in Tuscany: little pockets, special places
where extraordinary and singular wines can
be made. This Estate was bought by the
Bazzocchi family in the 1940s and since the
mid 80s has been headed by Lucia Bazzocchi
Sanjust with the assistance of her son Luca
who is now managing the winery. The
technical agronomist is Carlo Nesterini, the
oenologist is Stefano Guidi and since June
2002, Carlo Ferrini has been collaborating
on agricultural and vinification issues.
Vinification
After a careful selection, grapes are vinified
using indigenous yeasts for 12-15 days in
cement vats at the Petrolo winery. After a
short maturation in cement vats, Inarno is
bottled just a few months after harvest, in
the manner of a fresh, fruity Chianti.
