Sandrone - Cannubi Boschis 2010
Tasting note
Tar, smoke, licorice, incense, blood orange and sweet spices are some of the
many notes that emerge from the 2010 Barolo Cannubi Boschis. Today the 2010
is firing on all cylinders. The flavors are broad, rich and ample, with fabulous delineation,
energy and class. A creamy, resonant finish laced with exotic floral and
citrus notes only adds intrigue in this drop-dead gorgeous Barolo.
Vineyard
Cannubi extends north from the village of
Barolo and has been planted to Nebbiolo
on its south and east exposures for at least a
century. The “Boschis” subzone of the Cannubi
is located directly across the little valley
from the Sandrone winery building. The
Cannubi Boschis subzone has a particularly
good exposure to the south and southeast in
a small bowl or “conca” that helps hold the
warmth in the early morning. Its soils are sea
deposits of calcareous clay, not very deep,
with good drainage.
Estate
Luciano Sandrone is one of the iconic
producers in Barolo, and his is both a well
known and extraordinary story. He started
to learn viticulture at the age of 14 or 15,
and after years of work as a cellarman he
depleted his life savings and purchased his
first vineyard on the Cannubi hill in 1977,
though he could only manage his land on
the weekends while he continued to work.
He made his first few vintages in his garage,
until the winery he built in 1998 was ready.
Luciano has devoted every fiber of his being
towards cultivating the finest Nebbiolo from
his sites in Barolo and the Roero, and transmitting
these expressions through his wines.
Vinification
Each lot is vinified separately, and after destemming
and light crushing, the must is
covered with CO2 for a gentle warm maceration
of approximately a day. Alcoholic
fermentation begins about 24-36 hours later
from native yeasts. A gentle maceration
takes place in upright open-top steel tanks
for the first 9-10 days of alcoholic fermentation.
Immediately after alcoholic fermentation,
which takes 28-30 days, malolactic
fermentation takes place in 500 liter French
oak casks. The wine is aged in these casks
(20-25% new) for 24 months.
Wine
Barolo Cannubi Boschis is the Sandrone
flagship wine, and the wine that garnered
Luciano his early acclaim with international
trade and press. This single-vineyard wine
is one the of great cru sites in Barolo, synonymous
with richness and complexity. It is
typically dense and concentrated, but shows
incredible harmony and balance. In great
vintages, properly cellared examples will
drink well for 20+ years.
