Estate
The firm of E. Guigal, located in Ampuis, was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal. Since 1961 his son Marcel has led the estate, and his unparalleled work ethic and dedication to quality have brought attention to Côte-Rôtie and other appellations throughout the Rhone that were in danger of being
lost, and lifted the Guigal wines to the pinnacle of the wine world. Today, Marcel’s
son Philippe serves as Director and Oenologist, continuing the tradition of leadership in the Rhone Valley and uncompromising excellence.
Wine
The Cotes du Rhone appellation applies to red, white, and rose wines from vineyards throughout the Rhone Valley, comprising about 90% of the total production of the region. Quality and style can vary widely. By selecting and blending cuvees from a number of top growers, the Guigals produces exceptional examples of all three wines. Guigal has a very specific approach to producing
rose wines in that they look for wines full of flavor, texture and structure. As a result, they produce wines with an almost radiant color, bursting with red fruits, an underlying strong minerality, and the constitution for year-long drinking. The 2013 blend is made up of Grenache (35%), Cinsault (35%), Syrah (25%) and Mourvèdre (5%).
Vineyard
The soil is alluvia clay- limestone and gravel, and the average age of the vines are 25 years.
Yields are low, 35 hectoliters/hectare.
Vinification
The wine is drawn off the skins (the saignee method) after a brief maceration and long temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Unlike some other producers using this method, Guigal never produces rose as a by-product of red wine. The blend is made up of Grenache, with
Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Syrah rounding out the rest of the blend.
