Finca Decero - The Owl & The Dust Devil 2014
Vintage
The 2014 vintage was one of the coolest in our history. After the above average temperatures of December and January, the temperatures dropped
dramatically in February which, combined with Summer rain, delayed grape maturation by nearly one week. As Autumn progressed the temperatures remained below average and very cool. Each of the varieties from this vintage had marked acidity and pronounced aromatics.
Finca Decero
The grapes are sourced exclusively from the western part of Finca Decero's Remolinos Vineyard at 1050 metres in the Agrelo sub-appellation of
Mendoza. The vines are planted on low vigour, sandy clay loams. Nurtured by hand, the vines are leaf plucked on the east facing canopy and clusters are thinned to one cluster per shoot. The grapes were handpicked into small boxes from 9th-25th April 2014.
Winemaking
The grapes underwent Finca Decero's 4-step selection process to selection berry by berry before being gravity fed into small fermentation tanks. 7
days cold soak was followed by 10 days fermentation in small stainless steel tanks at 25-26°C for more aromatic parcels and 28-29°C for parcels with
more concentration and structure. Finally, the parcels benefited from 15 days of maceration post fermentation before being transferred to mature in
small French oak barrels (40% new oak) for 18 months. Only after this stage, the final selection of parcels and the optimal composition of the wine
were decided. The wine was then bottled in entirety on 25th November 2015, in one single session to safeguard the consistency from bottle to bottle.
The Owl and the Dust Devil
This red wine is a single vineyard blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Tannat. The Malbec has an aromatic quality and the wine
has the silky structure synonymous with the wines of our Remolinos Vineyard. In addition to the fine backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, the wine has an exceptionally rich core of Petit Verdot and Tannat, which provide depth of character and flavour for superb ageing potential.
